What did your summer smell like?

I never really thought about that question until this year. I’ve packed a lot into this summer—hiking, picnics, afternoons swimming, beach trips, and summer fairs. I’ve enjoyed dinners outside, made weekend plans, and had plenty of those little summer moments that don’t seem especially important at the time.

But now, somewhere around mid-August, I’m realizing just how quickly the season is passing. And as I look back at the summer so far, I’ve noticed something I hadn’t really thought about before: I can remember some of these moments by their scents.

A fresh, citrusy candle can bring me back to a sunny afternoon. A clean, aquatic scent can remind me of a day near the water. A sweet, fruity scent can take me back to a summer fair or a treat shared with family.

Maybe that’s what makes scent such a wonderful part of a season. We don’t always realize we’re creating these associations as we make the memories.

Out in the Open

The Scents of Days Spent Outside

I’ve spent a lot of time outdoors this summer. Hiking, swimming, walking, and beach trips have all been part of the season, and after a day outside, I’ve often wanted my home to feel just as fresh.

That is where scents like Desert Sage, Cucumber Melon, Coastal Mist, Ocean Storm, and Rain Showers fit so naturally.

Some remind me of greenery and fresh air, while others have that clean, watery quality that makes me think of being near the ocean or pool. They don’t necessarily recreate a specific place, but they capture the feeling of being outdoors—and sometimes that’s enough.

It’s funny how a scent can transport you without actually taking you anywhere.

A Taste of Summer

The Sweet Side of Summer

Summer has also been about simple treats.

I’ve had lemonade on warm afternoons, enjoyed fresh fruit, stopped for something sweet after being outside, and wandered through summer fairs where the air seems filled with the smell of every kind of treat imaginable.

That is the mood I associate with some of the brighter summer scents, including Lemon Drop, Old Fashioned Lemonade, Fresh Lemon Zest, Sunberry Citrus, Strawberry Moon, and Tropical Guava.

Citrus and fruity scents have a way of making a room feel instantly brighter. They feel playful and carefree—much like summer itself.

And I think that’s why they work so well as memory-makers. Years from now, I may not remember exactly what day I had that lemonade or where I stopped for dessert. But a familiar lemon or berry scent might bring the feeling right back.

In Full Bloom

Summer in Bloom

I’ve also noticed how much of summer seems to be about flowers.

From gardens and farmers’ markets to flowers along hiking trails, there is color everywhere this time of year. By August, everything seems to have reached its fullest expression.

Scents such as Flower Power, Pink Cherry Blossom, Stardust Tulip, Twinkling Lavender, and Spring Growth capture different sides of that feeling.

Some are soft and floral, while others feel more botanical and fresh. For me, they aren’t necessarily tied to one particular memory. Instead, they remind me of summer as a whole—the warmth, color, and the feeling of being surrounded by things in bloom.

A Little Escape

Bringing a Little Vacation Home

Beach trips and summer getaways have been some of my favorite parts of the season, but I’ve also realized that I don’t need to be away to enjoy that vacation feeling.

Sometimes, I just want my home to feel relaxed and easy after a busy day.

Summer Vacay, Vanilla Sea Salt, Seaside Citrus, and Tropical Dreams fit that mood beautifully. They recall sunshine, warm air, the ocean, and those days when the only plan is to enjoy where you are.

Lighting one at home can be an effortless way to hold on to that feeling a little longer.

The Moments In Between

The Quiet Moments Matter, Too

Of course, not every summer memory comes from a big outing.

Some of my favorite moments have been the quieter ones—coming home after a long day outside, having dinner on the patio, opening the windows in the evening, or simply sitting down with a candle after everything else is done.

For those moments, I’ve found myself drawn to softer scents such as Cotton Blossom, Bamboo Lotus, and Twinkling Lavender.

They don’t demand attention. They simply make the room feel comfortable, which is sometimes exactly what I want at the end of the day.

And perhaps those are the memories we don’t appreciate enough while we’re making them. Nothing extraordinary happened. We simply had a good evening.

“That’s the quiet magic of scent.”

Before Summer Ends

What I’ll Remember About This Summer

By mid-August, I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to summer.

There are still warm evenings ahead, more opportunities for a picnic, another swim, another hike, and hopefully a few more spontaneous plans. Fall will come soon enough.

But pausing for a moment and thinking about the summer so far has made me realize how many memories I’ve already collected—and how many of them have a scent attached to them.

I may not remember every date, every weekend plan, or every place I’ve visited. But I know that certain scents will bring some of those moments back.

That’s the quiet magic of scent. We experience it in the background as we live our lives, and sometimes, much later, it becomes the thing that helps us remember.

Final Thoughts

Maybe that’s why seasonal candles feel like more than just décor to me. They become part of the atmosphere of our lives.

This summer has given me hikes, picnics, swimming afternoons, beach trips, fairs, dinners outside, and plenty of ordinary days that have felt anything but ordinary.

And now, as August reminds me that summer won’t last forever, I’m paying a little more attention to the scents that have been part of it.

Because someday, one familiar scent may be all it takes to bring this summer back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can a scent bring back a specific memory?
Scent has a strong connection to the areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion. That’s why smelling a familiar scent can sometimes bring back a particular place, person, or experience.
What candle scents are best for summer?
Fresh citrus, fruity, floral, aquatic, green, and botanical scents are especially popular for summer. They can create a bright, refreshing atmosphere that complements the season.
Can a candle become associated with a memory?
Yes. When you regularly burn a particular candle during a meaningful experience, its scent can become associated with that moment. Smelling it again later may bring that memory back.
What are some fresh summer candle scents?
Citrus, cucumber, melon, aquatic, rain, and botanical-inspired scents are all popular choices for creating a fresh summer atmosphere.
Is August too late to burn summer candles?
Not at all. August is still summer, and lighter, brighter scents can be enjoyed throughout the season. You can gradually introduce warmer scents whenever you’re ready for fall.
